“Receive researcher of the UAC National Award for Forest Merit granted by the Federal Government”

Dr. Claudia Maricusa Agráz Hernández, Titular Research Professor attached to the Institute of Ecology, Fisheries and Oceanography of the Gulf of Mexico (EPOMEX) of the Autonomous University of Campeche, received the National Prize for Forest Merit in the Forest Restoration category, awarded by the Federal Government through its Secretariat of Environment and Natural Resources (Semarnat) and the National Forestry Commission, in an event held in the State of Colima.

This is the recognition given by the Federal Government to individuals and corporations of the private and social sectors that carry or have carried out actions in the country in favor of the conservation, protection, restoration and sustainable use of forest resources, which represent benefits to the society and that leave a legacy that encourages the new generations to take actions in favor of the sustainable forestry development of the country.

The UACAM signed a collaboration agreement with the government of the Republic of Benin for the restoration of wetlands

The UACAM EPOMEX Institute will provide technical and scientific support to the Government of the Republic of Benin to "Consolidate the design of a sustainable development that promotes social equity, strengthens the economy, protects the environment and exalts human coexistence with its environment, is a commitment that humanity must take very seriously " said Gerardo Montero Perez, Rector of the Autonomous University of Campeche, during his participation in the signing of the Agreement on restoration, conservation and sustainable management of mangroves in Benin in the face of climate change, in which the Institute of Ecology, Fisheries and Oceanography of the Gulf of Mexico (EPOMEX) participates in this house of studies.

Regenerate 217 thousand mangrove plants in Jaina Island, Campeche

Through the Environmental Compensation Program for Change in Land Use (CUSTF), CONAFOR assigned to the Institute of Ecology, Fisheries and Oceanography of the Gulf of Mexico (EPOMEX) of the Autonomous University of Campeche (UAC), 32.8 million pesos for implement a restoration program on 600 hectares in a degraded mangrove area located in the Petenes Biosphere Reserve, in the municipality of Hecelchakán. Where 120 people from the communities of Dzodzil and Chunkanán are benefited from 2012, with employment and social security; this through training to carry out hydrological rehabilitation activities (excavation of canals and desazolve of natural channels), as well as reforestation with propagules of Avicennia germinans and Rhizophora mangle .

After the fulfillment of 100% of the goal and survival of 85% of the plants, the CONAFOR authorized, in the month of April 2017, additional resources for 29 million 567 thousand 700 pesos, in order to expand with 517 hectares more the restoration program. With this, benefiting the communities again from Dzodzil and Chunkanán for four more years.
